Between September 1991 and December 1993, the physical and chemical properties of the South waste rock dump at La Mine Doyon were measured for the purpose of identifying the key processes contributing to acid rock drainage production. Several physical parameters, such as climatic data, temperature profile, priezimetric levels, and others, were monitored. Numerical modelling of acid mine drainage production in waste dumps was also discussed.

Waste rock can be a source of toxic, reactive materials, such as acid rock drainage and heavy metals such as arsenic. All of these can adversely impact aquatic and other organisms, as well as surface and ground waters. Constructing and Designing Waste Rock Piles Constructing and designing waste rock piles and/or dumps involves four major. Abstract. The uncontrolled release of acid mine drainage (AMD) is perhaps the most serious impact mining can have on the environment. The cumulative length of streams worldwide affected by acid mine drainage is not known, but over km of streams in the eastern United States are seriously affected by acid drainage from coal mines (Kim et al. ).

(b) monitored Zn isotopic compositions of moderately acidic (pH ~ 4–) mine drainage in an experimental waste rock pile and found small variations in δ 66 Zn which averaged + ± ‰ (2 SD, n = 43) relative to the IRMM Zn isotope standard over a 2-year monitoring period, suggesting little effect of.
A guide to the investigation, design, operation and monitoring of mine waste rock dumps and stockpiles. Guidelines for Mine Waste Dump and Stockpile Design is a comprehensive, practical guide to the investigation, design, operation and monitoring of mine waste dumps, dragline spoils and major stockpiles associated with large open pit mines. These facilities are some of the largest man-made. Estimates of stream deposits of sediment from mine tailings were related to the chemistry of surface water to assess the effectiveness of the methodology to assess the risk of acid mine-drainage being dispersed downstream of abandoned tailings and waste rock piles.

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan In Association With: SENES Consultants Limited Richmond Hill, Ontario PROJECT S Contract /SQ OCTOBER 2. MEND – Design, Construction and Performance Monitoring of Cover Systems for Waste Rock and Tailings PREFACE Acid rock drainage (ARD), also referred to as acid mine drainage (AMD) or acidic drainage (terms used interchangeably throughout this report), is a major mining waste management issue in Canada.
EricksonLapakko b). Commonly referred to as acid rock drainage (ARD) or acid mine drainage (AMD), acid drainage from mine waste rock, tailings, and mine structures such as pits and underground workings is primarily a function of the mineralogy of the rock material and the availability of water and oxygen.
Acid Rock Drainage Prediction Manual i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Waste rock materials from mining, mineral processing and related operations, which contain sulphide minerals such as pyrite, have the potential to be the source of acidic contamination in the environment.
Such contamination is termed acid rock drainage (ARD). The testing of. Approximately Mt of waste rock will be produced over the current mine life to Waste rock exhibits a range of sulphur grade and ARD rock types from non acid forming to highly acid forming with a low inherent acid neutralising capacity (ANC) and short lag time before onset of acid generation in PAF rock.
Acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from pyrite oxidation is produced in two large waste rock dumps at La Mine Doyon located in Northwestern Quebec.
A monitoring program for the South Dump is designed to characterize the physical and geochemical conditions prevailing during AMD production within this coarse unsaturated material. prevent waste rock and tailings from contaminating the surrounding environment 3.
manage and control disposal of all tailings and waste rock 4. optimise the use of waste rock to ensure rehabilitation success.
Existing facilities. New tailings dams and waste rock dumps will be constructed, to encompass the increased. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is produced in two large waste rock dumps at La Mine Doyon.

Proceedings of the 8 th. Geochemical modeling of precipitation reactions in the complex matrix of acid mine drainage is fundamental to understanding natural attenuation, lime treatment, and treatment procedures that separate constituents for potential reuse or recycling.
The three main dissolved constituents in acid mine drainage are iron, aluminum, and sulfate. Waste rock and material modeling and characterization with respect to acid rock drainage (ARD) variables should be an integral part of a resource estimation study.
This chapter discusses the potential sources of ARD in an open‐pit mining context. Construction of experimental piles. Between andfive experimental waste-rock piles with dimensions of approximately 36 × 36 × 10 m (10, ± m 3), containing ∼20, tons of waste rock each, were constructed from run-of-mine waste rock (see schematic in Fig.
1B). The piles were built in distinct tipping phases using a progressive end-dumping method, which creates. Earth Systems advanced understanding of sulfide oxidation, AMD generation and the role of secondary acid generating sulfate salts has enabled us to develop leading practice strategies for managing waste rock from the design of waste rock piles, through planning / management of waste rock during operations to closure / rehabilitation / relocation strategies.
Although discard dumps have been identified as a source of acid mine drainage, not all dumps produce acid water. This is probably related to the type of pyrite present i.e. fine, porous and granular pyrite vs. pyrite that is mostly compact and crystalline.
Burnt dumps are also more likely to create acid water than those that. In a nutshell, acid mine drainage is a form of water pollution that happens when rain, runoff, or streams come in contact with rock that is rich in sulfur. As a result, the water becomes very acidic and damages downstream aquatic ecosystems.
In some regions, it is the most common form of stream and river pollution.Numerical Modelling of AMD Production in Waste Rock Dumps Author: René Lefebvre and Pierre J.
